1140 hours
The yearly amount of funded Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) an eligible child in Scotland is entitled to.
What it means
1140 hours is the amount of funded ELC an eligible child in Scotland is entitled to each year. It applies to all three- and four-year-olds and to eligible two-year-olds. The entitlement rose from 600 to 1,140 hours a year in August 2021.
Taken in term time, 1140 hours is about 30 hours a week. Spread across the full year, it is about 22 hours a week. Families choose how to use the hours from the attendance patterns their council offers, and can use them in more than one setting.
Parents usually say "1140 hours". On this site the same thing is called funded hours, because the number may change and the idea does not.
Also called 1,140 hours, 1140 expansion or free hours.
