Intake
The cohort of children admitted for one school session.
What it means
An intake is the cohort of children admitted for one session: the children starting Early Learning and Childcare (ELC), primary or secondary school in a given year. A council runs each intake as a cycle: applications open, close, are scored and allocated, and parents are told the outcome.
Some councils call this an admission round, or name it by the session, as in "the 2027/28 session". ELC often has more than one intake in a year, because children become eligible at different points.
Late applications, mid-year moves and changes in capacity all happen after the main intake has been allocated. That is where most of the manual work falls.
Also called entry cohort, admission round or session (as in "2027/28 session").
How Admit handles it
Each intake is set up with its own dates, settings, capacity and criteria. Applications are scored and matched to places for the intake as a whole.
Late applications and mid-year placements are handled on the same criteria, for the places that remain. ELC, primary and secondary intakes run on one platform.
Applications and allocation
Your criteria, applied consistently: scored, matched to capacity and placed in one run.
